HyperLydian in Meltzer, Bartok, Mudarra, and others

12 August 2024 /Reports

Thinking about Harold Meltzer.

I call it, “hyperLydian”. I’m told it’s found often in Indian music, but I’d love some examples. What’s do you call it? Please send examples. Interested in examples from before 1918.

16th C:

Here it is in Harold Meltzer’s Doria Pamphili, for solo guitar –

In Bartok’s Soldier’s Song –

I do it here in a trio for clarinet, violin, piano –

I think I hear it here in Shoko Suzuki’s “where air and water meet”.
